"Restoring the Soul in Health Care"
______________________________________________
Hospice of South Georgia was founded in 1987 when a group of concerned citizens met with the leadership of South Georgia Medical Center and expressed a desire to establish Hospice care in the Valdosta area. Many of these citizens became the first trained Hospice volunteers and team members serving this area. Their desire was to improve care and support to families facing the challenge of caring for loved ones at the end of life.
Hospice of South Georgia is the oldest hospice organization and the only community supported not-for-profit hospice based in the Valdosta area.
The original logo for Hospice of South Georgia was designed with a tree, to symbolize the seasons of life, and to convey the values of Hope, Compassion, Love, Respect, and Understanding.
Now, with over 20 years of service, this same desire, commitment and compassion for caring is stronger than ever. Our services have grown to include a service area including the greater Valdosta community and eight counties, including Atkinson, Berrien, Brooks, Clinch, Cook, Echols, and Lanier and Lowndes.
The Hospice of South Georgia caring professionals include RNs, LPNs, doctors, social workers, a chaplain, certified nursing assistants, bereavement counselors, and trained volunteers. The goals of our care are to help patients be as pain free and comfortable as possible, so they can make the most of their time that remains. With the support of the Hospice team, patients and their families often report an improved quality of life and reduced levels of discomfort, fear and anxiety.
Care is provided most often in the patient’s home, but can be offered in other settings which include assisted living facilities, nursing homes, hospitals and the Langdale Hospice House.
For most patients, Hospice care is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance programs. No one, however, is ever denied the services of Hospice of South Georgia for inability to pay.
When I first got involved in discussing the formation of Hospice of South Georgia, it was about offering those at the end of life to have some say in their care; to be a part of a group of people who care about dying with dignity. It was about putting the wishes of a patient and their family before anything else.
Our society has come a long way in recognizing the importance of this concept, but we still need to remember to keep it about the people for whom we care.
I’m proud to say that Hospice of South Georgia continues to guide its future as it honors that same, ongoing goal.
-Martin J. Miller, Hospice of South Georgia Founding Board Member
To all the beautiful people who cared for our father as well as our family:
You made life much easier for us by your loving care during our trying time, and we love you for it. You are an asset to our community.
