HOSG and LHH Now Offer Free Wi-Fi

6/17/2011

Hospice of South Georgia and the Langdale Hospice House, as affiliates of South Georgia Medical Center, now offer wireless capabilities to their patients, families, visitors and employees.

“At the Langdale Hospice House we often have family members who want to remain at the bedside of their loved one,” says Leta Cone, RN, Langdale Hospice House (LHH) Manager. “Their work, personal lives and responsibilities go on in spite of the situation. The installation of wireless capabilities is simply one way that we are helping to ensure that our visitors are able to continue to interact with others to obtain much needed emotional support. From a practical point of view, this access will assist them with continuing their lives during a very trying time. Life is often managed with computers and the Internet.”

The implementation of wireless technology at Hospice of South Georgia and the L HH also creates efficiency for employees. “Our employees are often working in the field providing services to our patients cared for at home,” states Libby Bickers, LMSW, Home Care Services Manager. “Now, when they return to our office and need to update and verify patient information such as medications & orders, they can do so with this wireless technology. Our new wireless capability will improve our employees’ access in a very secure manner so that all hospice staff can access the same up-to-date information on our patients.”

“From a technical point of view, our wireless implementation is the best of both worlds,” states Leshia Sattler, RN, Performance Improvement Coordinator. “Our Hospice of South Georgia employees are able to access our internal systems via SGMC Intranet through a secure log-in. Our visitors at the Langdale Hospice House can access the Internet from their own laptops to maintain some normalcy in their daily responsibilities via our Internet Café. Access is through a public network and does not connect to SGMC, HOSG, or LHH internal systems. Think of it as two separate pipelines: one for employees and one for visitors. With this type of implementation, our systems are completely secure while still providing access to the world through the Internet to our visitors. This set-up helps to ensure quality, efficiency, & security in all that we do.”

Amanda Patterson, Interim Executive Director of HOSG/LHH, states, “We have been working for some time to reach this goal. Our heart-felt desire is to continue to fulfill our vision of continually improving the quality of all of our services. We believe we provide the highest quality of hospice services available in this area. Our hospice house is the crown jewel of end-of-life care in South Georgia. Our mission is to remain state-of-the-art in all of the services we offer to the patients, their families and the community we serve.”
