Finding Light in Hospice: Wilma Payton’s Journey

By April 24, 2024 No Comments

In January 2023, Wilma Payton embarked on her courageous battle against cancer. She vividly remembers clinging to the mantra, “I believe in miracles,” during each treatment. However, as time passed, she came to the sobering realization that her cancer would never retreat into remission. Supported by her oncologist, she made the difficult decision to cease all treatments and transition into hospice care. Yet, her path to hospice was not without its challenges. Initially turned away by another agency, Wilma’s daughter, Beatrice, persistently sought aid until finding refuge with Hospice of South Georgia (HOSG).

Recalling her first encounter with HOSG nurse Brandi Nunes, RN, Wilma reflects on the profound impact of that moment. Amidst excruciating pain and diminished appetite, Brandi offered reassurance, illuminating the broader scope of hospice care beyond mere end-of-life support. “If it weren’t for Brandi’s compassion and guidance, I might not be here today,” Wilma gratefully acknowledges.

Initially skeptical, Beatrice confesses her misconception that hospice equated to surrender. However, witnessing her mother’s renewed vitality, engaging with grandchildren, and pursuing everyday joys like cooking and anticipating a loved one’s graduation, her perspective shifted dramatically. “Mom’s resilience has proven that hospice is not about giving up, but about embracing life with newfound vigor,” she says.

Echoing this sentiment, Eli Metts, NP at HOSG, emphasizes the transformative potential of hospice, citing its capacity to extend life through effective symptom management and unwavering support, “While cannot change the terminal nature of a patient’s cancer, we often can extend their time and quality of life.”

For Wilma, the impact of hospice has been nothing short of miraculous. HOSG nurse Alina Rountree, RN, vividly recalls the stark contrast between their first encounter, where Wilma lay motionless with pallid skin, and the subsequent day, marked by a remarkable improvement in mobility and color. “I owe my newfound vitality to my dedicated team at HOSG,” Wilma says, expressing gratitude for the holistic support provided by her caregivers.

Assisted by her devoted daughter and the compassionate HOSG team, Wilma now savors the simple pleasures of life, indulging in pancakes and sausage each morning. When asked to impart wisdom to others facing a similar journey, she urges embracing hospice care. Dispelling misconceptions, she underscores the potential for hospice to not only prolong life but also to foster a meaningful existence. “Don’t lose hope,” Wilma affirms. “Hospice isn’t the end—it’s a new beginning, offering precious time and invaluable support.”
